With kids spending so much time outdoors biking, hiking, swimming, at the playground, playing sports, etc….there are bound to be more bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes and other minor injuries. These are the most common reasons parents seek help this time of year, but they are also conditions that usually respond to safe and effective natural remedies.

EPSOM SALT — Calms bumps and bruises.

Pour 1 cup of epsom salt into a plastic bag and place it on the bruise, then top it with a heating pad for 15 minutes. When exposed to heat, the magnesium sulfate in Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin, even through the bag. This naturally boosts magnesium in the body, which reduces swelling. Plus, the heat calms inflammation and brings blood flow to the area to speed healing

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR — Heals scrapes.

Add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to their bath. The vinegar boasts proteins, enzymes and good bacteria that kills germs and fights off infection, and diluting it in bathwater prevents it from stinging or leaving a lingering odor.

HONEY — Soothe road rash.

My son Kell is an avid longboarder and has gotten some serious road rash from falls. Honey is the best thing for it! A study in the International Journal of Clinical Practice concluded that honey is even a viable treatment for surgical wounds. Honey covers injured tissue with a thick, protective barrier, preventing contamination. Plus, it contains healing properties.

Use a tongue depressor to apply a layer of honey to the wound and tape a nonstick gauze pad over it, reapplying honey and replacing the bandage twice a day.
