We strongly recommend consulting with your doctor before using any essential oils during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Certain oils can pose risks to you and your baby, so it’s important to proceed with caution.
Avoid using essential oils entirely during your first trimester, as this is the most critical stage of fetal development. If you are experiencing a difficult or high-risk pregnancy, it’s safest to avoid essential oils altogether.
For those in their second or third trimester, some essential oils can be used in moderation, but never ingest them. In fact, we do not recommend ingesting essential oils at any time, as many can be toxic to both you and your baby.
In general, aromatherapy is considered safer than topical application during pregnancy. If you choose to diffuse oils, run your diffuser for short periods in a well-ventilated room—opening a window is a good idea—and use smaller amounts than you normally would. Pregnancy can heighten your sense of smell, making aromas more intense.
If you choose to apply oils to your skin, dilute them properly with a carrier oil such as coconut, almond, or olive oil. A 1% dilution is recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding (about 2 drops of essential oil in a 10 ml roll-on bottle, filled the rest of the way with carrier oil).
The only blend in our shop that is safe for topical or aromatic use during pregnancy is Freshly Washed. Our single oils, lavender, lemon, and sweet orange, are also considered safe for use when properly diluted. All other blends contain oils that should be avoided while pregnant.
If you are breastfeeding, never apply essential oils to your chest or anywhere your baby might ingest them. Do not allow oils to come into contact with your baby’s skin, and avoid exposing babies under 3 months old (or 3 months past their original due date, for preemies) to essential oils entirely. Once your baby is older, ensure oils are fully absorbed or removed from your skin before contact. Monitor your baby for any reaction, such as rash or discomfort, and stop use if symptoms occur.
First and foremost, we strongly advise against the ingestion of essential oils, especially by children. Essential oils are intended for topical or aromatic use only, after proper dilution.
Consult with a pediatrician to identify which essential oils, if any, are suitable for your child and to understand the recommended dilution rates and application methods.
For additional insights into essential oils and children, we recommend referencing this article from Johns Hopkins Medicine: Are Essential Oils Safe for Children?
When using essential oils around children, always adhere to the following safety practices: ensure oils are properly diluted, use diffusers for short periods in well-ventilated areas, and keep all essential oil products out of reach of children.
If you suspect a child has been exposed to essential oils and is showing adverse effects — such as skin irritation, difficulty breathing, coughing, watery eyes, vomiting, lethargy, or more severe symptoms — take immediate action:
We do not recommend applying essential oils directly to pets. Additionally, caution should be exercised when diffusing essential oils around them. Animals can react differently to certain aromas and compounds, and what is harmless to humans can sometimes be dangerous for animals.
Before incorporating essential oils into your pet-inclusive environment, please consult with your veterinarian. For further insights into the impact of essential oils on pets, please reference the ASPCA: The Essentials of Essential Oils Around Pets
According to the New York Times, if you suspect your pet has been exposed to essential oils and is showing any adverse effects — such as watery nose or eyes, skin or gum redness, drooling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, lethargy, tremors, or more severe symptoms like liver failure — take immediate action:
You can put essential oils on your dryer balls, but it is a potential fire risk. However, many people do this with no problem. While the risk appears to be low, we still want to make sure the understanding is out there. Your dryer can reach a temperature of up to 145°F, with 125°F on the lower scale. Essential oils have flashpoints, which is the temperature at which the oils will turn into vapor, with the potential of heat or another ignition source causing a fire. A lot of common fragrances (such as citrus) have flashpoints in the 105-130°F range. As you can see, this does put them in the potential danger zone.
