Dermaplaning has gotten quite popular as a facial treatment over the last couple of years! And while it may sound complex and scientific, “dermaplaning” is just a fancy dermatology term for shaving your face. (There’s a little more to it than that, but not much!)

After doing some research about the benefits of shaving your face, I was willing to give it a try. And while at first shaving my face felt a bit strange, but now that I know how soft and smooth it makes my skin look and feel, I’m a full-fledged believer!

If you’ve been curious about the buzz, you’ve come to the right place! Not only will this post teach you about the best benefits of shaving your face, but you’ll also learn the right way to do it to maximize those benefits.

5 Benefits Of Shaving Your Face

1. Eliminates Dark Hairs

You know those pesky, dark, thick hairs sprouting from various locations on your face and neck? Shaving is a quick way to get rid of them, and it’s often quicker than hunting each one down and plucking them individually.

2. Makes Makeup Easier To Apply

Clearing your face of dark hair and peach fuzz can make it easier to put on makeup! Your foundation will glide smoothly and easily onto your hair-free face. Some women even say they use less makeup because it’s so easy to apply and blend!

3. Promotes Clearer Skin

In addition to removing hair, shaving also helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This makes it much harder for dead skin to build up over time and cause breakouts. It’s a great way to incorporate regular exfoliation into your beauty routine!

4. Enhances Effects Of Skincare Products

Another benefit of shaving is that it helps your skincare products work better. The exfoliating effect of shaving allows products to dive deep into your skin to deliver vitamins, antioxidants, and other beneficial ingredients. And when your products work better, you don’t have to use as much of them, and that can save you money over time.

5. Easier Than Other Hair Removal Methods

There are plenty of options for removing hair and dead skin from your face — plucking, waxing, dermaplaning, threading… this list goes on and on! But the advantage of shaving is that you can do it quickly and cheaply in your own home. Plus it doesn’t hurt, which is more than you can say about waxing and plucking!

Will Shaving Make My Hair Grow Back Darker Or Thicker?

The answer is NO; shaving your face will not make your hair grow back darker, thicker, or coarser. This is many women’s biggest concern about shaving, but there’s no need to worry!

According to Elizabeth K. Hale, a Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at the NYU Langone Medical Center, “It is definitely a myth that shaving will make the hair coarser or darker.”

This myth is so pervasive due to our differing perceptions of blunt and tapered hairs. Shaving cuts hair off at the surface, leaving it with a blunt edge. Other hair removal methods remove hair from the root, causing it to grow back with a tapered edge. A blunt-edged hair can appear thicker than one with a tapered edge, though the color and thickness are the same.

How To Shave Your Face

Now that we’re finished myth-busting, it’s time to get down to business! Here are a few helpful tips about shaving your face.

Step 1 – Cleanse And Dry Your Face

Starting with a clean face will help you get a close, comfortable shave! Use your favorite cleanser, then dry your face thoroughly with a clean towel.

Step 2 – Apply Shaving Cream/Gel

A good shaving cream or gel will help the razor glide comfortably across your skin. It will also help keep your skin hydrated and reduce irritation.

One of the best-rated options on Amazon is Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel, a dermatologist-recommended gel containing oats and vitamin E. You could also use good old-fashioned aloe vera gel, which moisturizes and helps the blade glide smoothly over your skin.

Step 3 – Shave!

Using a fresh, sharp razor is one of the best ways to avoid razor burn. Another way to avoid razor burn is to use a single-bladed facial razor.

To use a facial razor, pull your skin taught, and shave in the same direction as the hair is growing. Use light pressure and be extra careful until you’ve gotten the hang of it!

Step 4 – Apply A Moisturizer

Hydration is key after shaving because you just uncovered a fresh, new layer of skin and you want to keep it moisturized! A moisturizer with aloe vera can help soothe skin after shaving. I love the Ideal Daily Moisturizer in my shop that includes aloe vera and hyaluronic acid.

How Often Should I Shave My Face?

It depends on how quickly your hair grows! Many women only shave once or twice a month, but some women prefer to shave their faces weekly.

What Razors Should I Use to Shave My Face?

You’ve probably noticed that the razor pictured in this post isn’t the same kind of razor you would use to shave other areas of your body! You want to make sure to get a razor specifically meant for facial shaving and dermaplanning.

I found razors I like so much that I’m selling them in the By Jillee Shop!

These affordable razors won’t irritate your skin and fold closed for safe and compact storage. They even come with a replacement razor head you can attach if your blade ever loses its edge!

And I’m not the only one that loves these razors! Just check out these reviews from other OGT readers:

"Jillee’s folding razor is literally a God-send! My skin can no longer tolerate the chemical product I was using to remove facial hair. Now, with Jillee’s folding razor, I am able to remove unwanted hair safely and effectively without a skin reaction."

Sandy

"I was so, so nervous to use a razor on my face. It was easy to use and did a wonderful job. My face is now so smooth! I loved this razor so much that I gave one to my daughter!"

Jacqueline C.

"I love it. I keep one in my bag, one in the car, and one at home. Those pesky hairs creep up on you, and I am always ready for a touch-up. Also, before makeup, it really helps to create a smooth blank canvas for the face."
