Whether you’re just getting started with essential oils or have been using them for years, it’s a good idea to review the basics once in a while. So that’s what we’re doing in today’s post! Consider this your simple back-to-basics guide to the many ways using essential oils can improve your everyday life.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are extracted from plants or parts of plants through a distillation process. Distillation produces a highly concentrated oil that contains both the scent compounds and beneficial properties of that particular plant. In other words, the distilled oil contains the “essence” of the plant, hence the name “essential oils"!
All of the oils in my shop contain 100% pure, authentic, therapeutic-quality essential oil with no adulterants. They've been verified by GC-MS testing from an independent laboratory.
The use of essential oils to treat health conditions and promote wellness is not a new development. In fact, people have been using some form of essential oils for thousands of years!
How Do I Use Essential Oils?
Instead, we’ll focus on two of the most popular methods of using essential oils: aromatic use and topical application. Both methods are useful in their own ways, and between the two, I end up using essential oils almost every day!
Using Essential Oils Safely
While essential oils can have a lot of benefits, they can cause harm if used incorrectly. Here are a few guidelines that will help you use oils safely and effectively:
- I don't recommend applying essential oils directly to pets. Additionally, caution should be exercised when diffusing essential oils around them. Before incorporating essential oils into your pet-inclusive environment, please consult with your veterinarian
- Don’t use citrus oils on your skin before going out in the sun. These oils are photosensitive and can cause burns and other painful skin conditions.
- Pregnant women and children should exercise caution with essential oils. Check with your doctor prior to using any essential oils.
- Always store oils in a cool, dark place to ensure they last as long as possible.
Using Essential Oils Aromatically
Using a diffuser is a great way to enjoy the benefits of essential oils. When you add essential oils to water in a diffuser, it produces a fine mist that carries the oil into the air. All you have to do is breathe normally, and you’ll inhale the oils and experience their benefits!

Here are a few things you can use a diffuser for:
Get Better Sleep – If you struggle with falling asleep like I do, diffusing essential oils can help! Set up your diffuser on your nightstand, and add a few drops of a relaxing oil (such as Slumber or lavender) to the water. You’ll be drifting off to sleep in no time!
"Love, love, love Slumber! I use a few drops from the bottle in my diffuser and put a swipe on each temple and the back of my neck from the roll-on. Then I climb into bed and try to read, but within minutes, I end up with the book falling on my face - because I'm out!"

Clear Congestion and Soothe Inflammation - Diffusing essential oils just might be the solution to your allergy woes! Add a few drops of my All Clear blend to your diffuser to clear nasal congestion and soothe inflammation. It contains a blend of eucalyptus, peppermint, and tea tree.
"This really, truly works. If you have tried everything for allergies and yet still suffer, try this!"

Freshen Your Home - Unpleasant odors have no chance against essential oils. I like to use my Simple Clean blend (with oils like lemon, cedarwood, and lemongrass) in my diffuser to eliminate odors and freshen the air. It leaves my home smelling clean and inviting.
“Simple clean is a very nice blend of essential oils. It has a clean and pleasant aroma. It is not overwhelming. I was surprised when my husband said he likes it too. Normally, scented things are too much, in his opinion. I use it in a cool mist diffuser.”

Strengthen Your Immunity - During cold and flu season, diffusing the right oils can help protect your health. Add a few drops of my Defend Blend to your diffuser to purify the air and bolster your immune system.
“I love this product! I have been diffusing Defend in my kitchen for over a year. My family of 6 made it through last school year with very little sickness. I work with preschoolers who love spreading germs and have stayed healthy. Highly recommend Defend!”

Using Essential Oils Topically
Another way you can enjoy the benefits of essential oils is by applying them topically to your skin. While some oils are safe to apply “neat,” or undiluted, it’s generally safer to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying. (Your oils will also last a bit longer this way!)
As a general rule, aim to use 3-5 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil.
